  • 8 ounces dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until well combined.
  4. Stir in boiling water until the batter is smooth; it will be thin. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  5. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. To make the frosting, heat the cream in a saucepan until just boiling. Pour over the chopped chocolate and let sit for 5 minutes. Stir until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar until desired sweetness is reached.
  7. Once the cakes are completely cool, layer them with frosting in between. Frost the top and sides of the cake and garnish with chocolate shavings or chunks if desired.
